French note coming home tomorrow

September 29, 2011

Dear Parents and Guardians,

For the past several weeks we have worked on reviewing the vocabulary associated with the basic objects in the classroom as well as some common French expressions.  We have also devoted a great deal of time to addressing some of our French Culture outcomes.  For example, we just finished studying French place names in Newfoundland and Labrador.

In the weeks to come we will be working on a new unit of study Vive L’amitiĆ©!  The theme of the unit is Friendship.  Your child will learn how to describe a class friend in French in terms of physical characteristics, personality traits, favourite colours and pastimes.

As part of this current unit I am asking each child to bring 4 photos of their friends to school.  A friend could be a neighbour, sibling, family pet, penpal, cousin or teammate.  The photo does not need to be on actual photo paper, a printed copy is fine.  I would like the students to have the photos in school by Friday, October 7 so that we can begin our French photo albums.  All photos will be returned to the student and we will use scotch tape to attach the pictures.

Secondly, in another week your child will be receiving a small photocopied French booklet.  I would like the students to be reading some short French books at home to help increase their French communication and confidence level.  The students will be able to click on videos or powerpoint presentations of me on my blog via the Mary Queen of Peace website.  The videos or powerpoints will enable your child to hear me read the text.  After several weeks I will have each child read the text to me.  As of right now I am hoping to have a different book for the students each month so they would have a total of nine books coming home throughout the school year.  I am currently working with our school’s Differentiated Instruction Teacher, Elizabeth McNeil, to select appropriate books.

Thank you for your continued help and support,
Deanne Burton Snow
