Long Division is no easy task

Tonight I assigned some extra Math practice for the students.  We spent the afternoon working on long division and some students could use a little more practice tonight.  We have to be finished this unit by Thursday so that we can move on to Patterns when we return from our Easter break. Each day this week I will be giving one or two long division equations to the students.  We will divide our class into groups and work accordingly.  Any extra help you could provide at home with mastering long division would be much appreciated.

Down and out

Hi everyone, Your teacher is down and out!  I will be home again tomorrow, but I know you are in good hands with Ms. Pyke and Ms. Thompson.  Tomorrow Ms. Pyke is going to have you create a texture collage in Art class.  If you have any old magazines at home then feel free to bring them in to help with your creation. With any luck Ms. Pyke will also be able to track down Mr. Walter and beg for the school iPads so that you can practice your long division with some new apps that I have found.

Do you have an iPad?

If you have an iPad at home you should check out some long division apps.  I am hoping that the students will be able to partner up tomorrow to use the 9 iPads that the school has purchased.  I have downloaded a couple of long division apps that I think will be perfect for our needs.  Search long division in the apps store.  There are some free apps so they them out!

Mr. Walter told me I should be able to attach my photos from the iPad directly to my blog.  Hmm, it seems this is not as easy as I would have hoped! Stay tuned for photos.  Oh, and Mr. Walter if you are reading this... I am going to be looking for you tomorrow.

Sent home today

March 14, 2013 Dear Parents and Guardians, As you are aware we are now finished our Math unit on Multiplication.   Attached to this letter you will find some samples of your child’s work.   You will see a worksheet involving multiplying by 10’s and 100’s.   In addition, there are some Problem Solving assessments.   Each Problem Solving assessment has a scoring guide attached to it. Another item you will see is a Reasoning question about Joe and his muffins.   You will notice a different scoring guide attached to this piece of work.   Please note that the grades you see on these assessments do not indicate a score that will be reflected on your child’s report card for this term.   When we decided on a grade for your child’s report card we looked at how he/she performed on the assessments attached as well as anecdotal evidence. Finally, you will see a Base 10 picture attached at the end of the package.   Many of the students ha...

Using every minute

We spent the last few minutes of our Healthy Commotion Day reviewing multiplication and division facts.  Congratulations to Maria our first place winner for multiplication facts and to John, our first place division facts winner!  We'll try this again tomorrow.  Stay tuned!

Healthy Commotion

Today was our Healthy Commotion Day.  The students could choose to go skating or bowling in the morning.  Ms. Pyke and I went skating.  Ms. Pyke spent some time trying to teach me how to stop, but she wasn't very successful! Later this afternoon we will be going outside for a walk around Kenny's Pond.  Mr. Fewer told me that he plans to take each elementary grade level outside for 30 minutes to do some outdoor activities.  We'll see what he announces in a few minutes.

Do you know what a chancel is?

We learned the definition of a chancel during Religion class on Friday.  Ask your parents if they know what a chancel is, I bet they'll have trouble with it.

Easter Seals Presentation

Today we finally heard the rescheduled Easter Seals presentation.  Each child was given a note for their parents/guardians to describe what was presented.  The session was very informative!  We topped it all off by watching Rick Mercer being led by a service dog. In other news, there was another fire alarm today.  We had to evacuate the school so we headed to the church for shelter.  I would advise all the students to keep a hoodie on the back of their chair in case this happens again.
