Letters sent home lately

Here are some notes that I sent home over the course of the last school week.  They are also posted under the heading NOTES.

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,
Some students have been asking me if we are going to have a Christmas Show and Tell.  Since many students are anxious to show some of their new treasures it seems like a great opportunity to practice our public speaking skills.
Each student can speak for up to one minute, but no less than 45 seconds.  During their allotted time they should:
-       Show the audience their object and tell what it is
-       Tell the audience who gave them the present
-       Explain what the present does
-       Tell why they chose that particular present to show to the class
-       Do you think you will still like the present this time next year?  Why or why not?
-       Was the gift a surprise or something that Santa knew that you wanted?
-       Do the other members of your family like the gift?
-       Do you have to share the gift?
You can prepare what you would like to say on a filecard if that helps you to relax a little more while you present.
Be sure you focus on expression, volume, speed and eye contact when you rehearse at home so that you are ready for your big debut!
We randomly drew presentation dates today and your presentation will be held on:
_____ Wednesday, January 11th, 2012
_____ Thursday, January 12th, 2012
_____ Friday, January 13th, 2012
Remember to think carefully about the object that you choose to bring to class.  If the object is expensive it might be better for you to consider an alternate gift as I do not want any precious treasures lost, broken or stolen.
Good Luck.  I can’t wait to see what you bring to class.

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,
As some parents may already know, we have been busy learning a short French play.  Each child has been assigned a role and we will be performing our shows for several French Immersion and Core French classes at school.
For the purposes of the play, each child is asked to make a puppet.  The choice of puppet materials is up to you, but we have discussed using items such as socks, paper bags, egg cartons, felt, etc.  I am asking that the puppets be completed at home and sent to school by Thursday, January 19th, 2012 so that we can be ready to present during the final week of January.
I will be preparing and posting a video of myself reading the play so that your child can review his/her lines at home.  The students are excited about this learning opportunity so I’m sure the plays will be quite amusing.  I am going to attempt to videotape the plays and post them on my blog for you to view at home if I can get the students to speak loudly enough.
Your child has been assigned the role of:
___ la poupée (pretty doll)
___ le train (red train)
___ l’ourson (can be a boy or girl teddy bear)
___ le narrateur (narrator, can be a boy, girl, man or woman of any age)
___ Père Noël (Santa)
___ le pompier (firefighter, should be a boy wearing boots)

Thank you for your continued help and support.  Merci beaucoup!

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had an enjoyable break.  Since the Christmas season is nearly over I am writing this letter to ask you to save the fronts (the pictures) on your Christmas cards and send them to school with your child.  I like to use the cards as writing prompts and it is always nice to have a good selection. In addition, it is good to show the students that an object can be recycled and appreciated in another form.
If you would like to see how we used recycled Christmas cards in December then you should visit my blog on the Mary Queen of Peace website and watch the slideshow presentation on 3 line poems.  Later this week I would like to introduce the format for the four line poem, but we will need a new supply of cards.
As always thanks in advance for your help with our classroom projects.

Regards,

Deanne Burton Snow
