Math FACTO Game

February 27, 2012
Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,
This week the students will not have any Spelling work to complete.  Instead of sending home Spelling, each child has been given a Math game to work on throughout the week.
The game is called FACTO and your child has already played it in class.  Today I gave each child two sheets of cardstock.  One sheet has a gameboard and the other has the chips that will need to be cut out.  The sheets are labeled gameboard and chips so that you will not be confused.
Step One:  Have your child cut out the chips and put them into a baggie.
Step Two:  Read the following rules with your child:
Turn all the chips over on a surface so that you cannot see what is written on the chip.
Step Three:  Player One takes a chip and finds the answer on the gameboard.  Player One puts their chip on the appropriate place.
Step Four:  Player Two takes a chip and finds the answer on the gameboard.  Player Two puts their chip on the appropriate place.
Step Five:  Repeat the process until someone finishes a straight line, either vertical or horizontal.  The person who makes a straight line first is the winner.  Clear the card and play again. (Please note:  It does not matter if the opposite player contributed to the winning line.  Whoever places the last chip to make it a straight line is the winner.)
I would like the students to play for at least 10 minutes each night from Monday-Thursday.
This game comes directly from our curriculum outcomes and will help the students to develop strategies for working with larger numbers.  As always, it is important to work on learning the basic facts too. It is difficult to play the game without a working knowledge of the facts.
Regards,

Deanne Burton Snow
