A Religion project
I sent home a copy of this note with each child today.
December 3, 2012
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This is the time of year when we think about how we can share the Christmas spirit. Teaching the children how to give back to others is part of our Grade 5 Religion program. Teachers are asked to help their students to develop a response to a human injustice such as poverty.
Several years ago I started something new with the students in my class and some have been asking if I am going to do it again. As we all know there are students in St. John’s who are in need. I have had conversations with teachers at other schools in St. John’s who have identified some small items they need for Christmas hampers for children in their classes. The items they need are small so I think it might be the right fit for our class project. If you would like to have your child donate one or more of the items on the list below it would be appreciated. It would be great if I could have all donations by Tuesday, December 18 so that I can ensure they are placed in the right hands in time for Christmas delivery.
It would be a great idea if you could have your child pay for the item by doing a chore or two around the house so that they understand that giving sometimes requires sacrifice. Plus, it may help you to get the dishwasher unloaded, the table set, a disaster area of a room cleaned up, etc. I should also add that participation in this initiative is entirely voluntary. Finally, sometimes students like to give their teachers Christmas presents. Although the gifts I have received over the years have been tasty and beautiful I would prefer the students give to the cause I have outlined on this note rather than to me.
Here is a list of the items which would be appreciated:
-coloring books - pencils
-packages of crayons -play-dough
-barbie dolls -small toy cars
-books (suitable for Grade 1 students) -toothbrushes and toothpaste
-hats, mittens and scarves -socks
-scissors (suitable for a small child) -gluesticks
Thanks for your continued help and support. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a great 2013!
