Talking Chips and Photo Retakes

On Friday we did a jigsaw grouping activity using talking chips.  Each student is assigned a home group and a working group.  The working groups complete specific tasks and then report their findings back to their home groups.  Since there are some students who like to talk more than others I gave each student 5 talking chips.  In order to speak you have to put one chip in the pot.  When all your chips are gone, you guessed it, you have to listen!  I am delighted to report that this activity went very well.  All students will meet with their home groups tomorrow to share what they have learned.

As an added note... I forgot to ask the students to write Photo Retakes in their agendas on Friday.  In case any of you were planning on having your child get a photo retake, the big day is tomorrow.

St. John's Recycling

Well today history was made for many people in the East End of St. John's.  I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the blue bags of recycling on my street this morning!  At Mary Queen of Peace we recycle on a regular basis.  We recycle juice containers and our paper.  As a teacher I am trying to do my part by double siding my photocopying more regularly.  I also like to remind my students to use up all the space in their exercise books before they begin a new page.  Part of our Health program this year involves learning about the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).  If you have a chance please talk to your child about the importance of recycling.  It is their planet and they are our future!  Have a look at the photo of my recycling below. As for what was happening in our class today... the friendly letters were continued.  Many thanks to the parents who have already supplied mailing addresses. Math today was a little rough....

French quiz and notes

From now on I will be posting notes that I give my class under the NOTES section of this blog.  If you click on NOTES you will see this message. September 24, 2013 Dear Students, Parents and Guardians, On __________________ , 2013 the Grade 5 students will be having a French quiz on their colours and numbers to 30. To prepare for this quiz the students should know their basic colours in French.   They will be asked to color some small pictures.   Each picture will be labeled with a color.   Here is a list of the colors that the students should know:   rouge-red, bleu-blue, jaune-yellow, brun-brown, blanc-white, noir-black, violet-purple, vert-green, orange-orange. Our Plays

Today we officially unveiled our plays to some wonderful audiences.  We began our day by presenting to Ms. White's class as well as Ms. Harris, Mme. Collett and Ms. Cleary.  The students also performed for their Kindergarten buddy readers and this afternoon they will perform once more for Mr. Yetman's class. Tomorrow I will be videotaping the students as they present their plays.  I plan on creating two cd's so that one boy and one girl can take home the video each night.  It should take about ten school nights before everyone at home sees the great work!  I am sure all parents are excited to see how the plays turned out. Many thanks to the parents who sent in props for our play.  A big thank you to all the parents who ran lines with their child in preparation for today's performance.
